Upfront payments create a basic commercial tension: the buyer needs confirmation of supply/delivery before committing payment, while the seller needs confirmation of payment before committing goods or services.

What is the risk with paying upfront?

Once money is paid directly to the other party, the payer may have less practical control if delivery or performance does not proceed as expected. At the same time, a supplier or contractor may reasonably be unwilling to commit materials, labour or capacity without payment confidence. A deposit mitigates some of the payment risk by only committing a portion of the final payment upfront, but even a deposit can be lost. Sellers/Suppliers fold on promises or even contracts for a variety of reasons including fraud, default, and restructuring. These causes are all completely out of the control of the buyer.

How can escrow help?

For an eligible transaction, the payer can secure the agreed money in escrow while settlement to the payee occurs later in accordance with the transaction. This can give the payee evidence that the transaction is funded without requiring immediate direct payment. In plain terms, the payment from the buyer is held until the good/service from the seller is provided. Through convenient Australian online escrow services like GoEscrow, both buyer and seller can mitigate payment risk in an even more efficient manner than deposits.

Is escrow appropriate for a deposit?

Only in select cases. Some industries and transactions are subject to specific contractual or legal requirements governing deposits, trust money, progress payments or retention money. Escrow cannot be used to bypass a mandatory payment regime unless otherwise stated. If the industry or transaction is governed by more specific regimes, a financial planner should be consulted before attempting to utilise escrow as well.

Frequently asked questions

Is escrow useful for a private sale?

It can be where buyer and seller want payment funded before goods are supplied, without requiring the buyer to pay the seller directly before the agreed handover or inspection conditions have been met.

Should a seller trust a payment screenshot?

A screenshot is not the official GoEscrow funding confirmation. Even when the screenshot is taken from the GoEscrow app, sellers should not trust it as confirmation. Sellers should rely on the transaction status in GoEscrow and wait for confirmation that the funds are in escrow before handing over or shipping the item.

Does GoEscrow check the item I am buying?

No. GoEscrow manages only the financial interaction. It does not inspect or supply the goods and does not independently verify their quality, condition, authenticity, ownership or title.

Who releases the money to the seller?

The GoEscrow product is designed around payer-controlled settlement: once the applicable conditions are met, the payer authorises settlement and GoEscrow remits the funds to the payee in accordance with the transaction and its terms.

What happens if buyer and seller disagree?

The funds can remain in escrow while the matter is addressed under the applicable GoEscrow cancellation or dispute process. The outcome depends on the circumstances, party instructions and the GoEscrow Terms of Use; using escrow does not guarantee a particular dispute outcome.

Can GoEscrow be used for an interstate private purchase?

Potentially, yes, where the transaction is eligible. Escrow can separate confirmed funding from later shipment, inspection or handover, which may be useful when buyer and seller cannot meet in person.
